Appliance Circuits, also known as Dedicated Circuits, are really just that: Circuits dedicated to each of your appliances. According to the National Electrical Code (NEC), all fixed appliances should have their own dedicated circuit.
What is a dedicated circuit?
A dedicated circuit has its own circuit breaker in your electrical box, and is intended for use with only one appliance, making it “dedicated” to that single appliance alone, not shared with any other. Dedicated circuits make sure that major appliances that draw a lot of electrical current are able to access the energy they need without overloading your system, blowing a fuse or tripping a circuit breaker. Certain medium to heavy duty appliances may require a dedicated circuit:
Appliances that need a dedicated circuit include:
- Washing Machines
- Electric ranges
- Wall ovens
- Blow Dryers
- Garbage disposals
- Central Heating
- Air conditioning
- Electric garage doors
- Sump pumps
- Water pumps
- Hot tubs or saunas
If you don’t have the appropriate amount of dedicated circuits for your appliance, one appliance may draw more current than the circuit can handle, this would result in an overload, or could cause the insulation around the wire to breakdown or melt. Once the insulating barrier around the wire has melted, the current is no longer safe, and can ignite flammable materials within the wall leading to an electrical fire, putting you and your safety at high risk.
